What a kicker is, and why it pays
In a five-card hand, four of a kind leaves one spare card: the kicker. In most video poker it doesn't matter. In Double Double Bonus it can be worth more than the quads themselves.
- Four aces with a 2, 3 or 4 kicker pay 400 per coin, or 2,000 on a five-coin bet. That's half a royal flush, and it comes along more often.
- Four 2s, 3s or 4s with an ace, 2, 3 or 4 kicker pay 160 per coin.
- Without the right kicker, four aces pay 160, four 2s to 4s pay 80, and any other four of a kind pays 50.
Those numbers explain the game's character. Aces and low cards are worth chasing in a way they aren't in Jacks or Better, and a single lucky deal can wipe out a long losing run.
Reading the Double Double Bonus pay table
The money for those big quads has to come from somewhere, and it comes from the hands you see most. Two pair pays only 1 per coin, half what it pays in Jacks or Better. Two pair turns up in roughly one deal in eight, so that cut costs you on almost every session.
As with other video poker, the full house and flush lines identify the version:
- Full house 10, flush 6 (full pay)100.07%
- Full house 9, flush 698.98%
- Full house 9, flush 597.87%
The returns assume perfect strategy for each table. Fair Go doesn't publish its version, so check those two lines in the game before you settle in. A full house paying 10 is the one to look for.
How strategy changes from Jacks or Better
The deal-hold-draw routine is identical, and the Jacks or Better hold chart is a fair starting point. The pay table pulls some decisions in new directions:
- Two pair is worth less, because it only returns your stake, so the strategy tables for this game rank it lower than in Jacks or Better.
- Aces matter more. A single ace or a pair of aces has extra value because of the 160- and 400-coin quads.
- Three of a kind is a strong hold. Drawing two cards to trips gives you two chances at a four of a kind, the hands this pay table rewards.
- Kicker decisions are table-specific. Whether to keep a low card next to three aces depends on the exact payouts, so use a chart built for the table you're playing.
Small strategy mistakes cost more here than in Jacks or Better, because so much of the return rides on a few hands. If you're still learning, start with Jacks or Better and move up once its chart feels automatic.
The price of big quads
Four of a kind of any rank lands only a few times in every thousand hands, and the premium aces-with-kicker hand far less often. Between those hits, the shrunken two pair payout means your balance usually trends down. That's what high volatility feels like: long quiet stretches and occasional big wins, with the same long-run return.
A practical response is a smaller coin size than you'd use for Jacks or Better, so the quiet stretches don't end your session early. Fair Go says you can play 1 to 100 hands per deal, and many hands at once raise the swings again, because each deal stakes far more.
While you're clearing a Fair Go bonus, bets are capped at $10, so watch the total stake per deal, and check how video poker counts towards the 30x wagering in Fair Go's terms. The rest of the family is on our video poker page, and our RTP and volatility guide explains why two games with similar returns can feel so different.
