The Aces and Eights pay table behind 99.78%

Fair Go quotes 99.78% for Aces and Eights, a house edge of 0.22%. That matches the published return of the standard Aces and Eights table in the panel above with perfect strategy, so it's a reasonable bet that's the table Fair Go uses. Check it in the game all the same: the full house should pay 8 and the flush 5 per coin.

Compared with full-pay Jacks or Better, the full house drops from 9 to 8 and the flush from 6 to 5. In exchange, three kinds of four of a kind pay much more:

  • Four aces or four eights80 vs 25
  • Four sevens50 vs 25
  • Return with perfect play99.78% vs 99.54%

The trade works out slightly in your favour on paper, at the cost of a little more swing.

Why aces and eights?

Wild West legend says Wild Bill Hickok was holding aces and eights when he was shot at a poker table in Deadwood in 1876, and the combination has been known as the dead man's hand ever since. The game's designers turned the story into a pay table: four aces or four eights pay 80 per coin. Four sevens pick up a smaller bonus of 50.

It's a fun theme, but it has a practical side. Those three ranks are the ones worth a second look when you're deciding what to hold.

Aces and Eights strategy

Aces and Eights plays very close to Jacks or Better, so the standard hold order works well:

  • Made hands first. Keep any paying hand of three of a kind or better, and four to a royal flush.
  • Pairs. Hold any pair. A pair of eights or sevens doesn't pay on its own, but it's slightly more valuable than other low pairs because of the bonus quads.
  • Two pair: hold both pairs and draw one card.
  • Draws. Four to a flush and four to an open-ended straight are worth holding. With nothing else, keep high cards, and draw five if you have none.
  • Five coins. The royal flush pays 4,000 at five coins, which is part of how the game reaches its quoted return.

The quoted 99.78% assumes perfect play for this exact table. Small departures cost a fraction of a percent each, so a strategy chart built for Aces and Eights is worth having open on your first few sessions.

Playing Aces and Eights at Fair Go

Fair Go says its video poker games can be played from 1 to 100 hands per deal. Your hold applies to every hand, and each one draws from its own deck. The expected return per hand stays the same, but the stake per deal multiplies with the number of hands. Five coins at 10c on 20 hands is $10 a deal.

That example sits exactly on Fair Go's $10 bet cap for bonus play, so it's worth doing the sum before you add hands while clearing a bonus. Fair Go's terms also decide how much video poker counts towards 30x wagering, which isn't in our facts register, so read them first.

Want bigger quads? Double Double Bonus Poker pays up to 400 per coin for four aces with a kicker. Want wild cards? Try Deuces Wild. Every game is listed on our video poker page.
