How to play craps: the bets worth making

Learning how to play craps is easier on Fair Go's screen than at the busiest table in any casino, without the crowd or the jargon shouted across it. The layout looks like a maze, but a good session only needs two or three bets. Here's how a round works, the dice maths behind it and what every common bet costs.

The dice maths behind every bet

Two dice can land 36 ways. Totals in the middle can be made more ways than totals at the edges, and every payout on the table is built on this count.

Seven is the number that matters most. It's the most likely roll, it wins the pass line on the first roll of a round, and it ends the round once a point is set.

How a round of Fair Go craps works

  1. Bet the pass line (or don't pass) before the first roll, called the come-out roll.
  2. The come-out roll. A 7 or 11 wins the pass line straight away. A 2, 3 or 12 (craps) loses it. Any other total, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10, becomes the point.
  3. Roll for the point. The dice keep rolling until either the point comes up again, which wins the pass line, or a 7 comes up first, which loses it. That's a "seven out", and the round is over.
  4. Add odds if you like. Once a point is set, you can back your pass bet with an odds bet, explained below.
  5. Start again with a new come-out roll.

Don't pass is the mirror image: it wins on 2 or 3, loses on 7 or 11, pushes on 12, and after a point wins if the 7 comes first. Come and don't come bets work exactly like pass and don't pass, but start on any roll after the point is set.

The best bets on the craps table

The cheapest craps sits in just a few boxes.

  • Pass line: 1.41%. The standard bet, and one of the lowest edges in the casino.
  • Don't pass: 1.36%. Slightly cheaper, because a 12 on the come-out pushes instead of winning for you.
  • Odds: 0%. After a point is set, the odds bet pays true odds: 2:1 on 4 or 10, 3:2 on 5 or 9 and 6:5 on 6 or 8. It's the only bet in the casino with no house edge. Adding odds lowers the edge on your total stake, to about 0.85% with single odds and about 0.61% with double odds.
  • Place 6 or 8: 1.52%. A good extra bet if you want more action than the pass line gives.

Fair Go doesn't publish how much odds its craps table allows behind a pass bet, so check the limit in the game. While you're wagering a bonus, every bet counts against the $10 cap, and odds bets add to your stake as the round goes on.

Bets to skip

The centre of a craps layout is full of one-roll and proposition bets with big payouts and bigger edges. Any seven pays 4:1 but should pay 5:1 to be fair, giving it a 16.67% edge. Any craps, the hardways and the eleven all run between 9% and 17%. They exist because they're exciting, not because they're good value.

The field looks tempting because it wins on seven different totals, but those totals add up to only 16 of the 36 combinations. With 2 and 12 paying double, its edge is 5.56%. A table that pays triple on 12 cuts that to 2.78%, still nearly double the pass line.

Online craps moves faster than a real table, with no wait for a shooter. Faster rolls mean more money staked per hour at the same edge, so a budget and a time limit matter more here than at most tables. Our responsible gambling page has practical limit-setting tips, and the rest of Fair Go's tables are on our table games page.

Fair Go craps FAQ

What's the best bet in craps?
The odds bet, which pays true odds and has no house edge, but you can only make it behind a pass or come bet. Of the starting bets, don't pass (1.36%) and pass (1.41%) are the cheapest.
What does seven out mean?
It's a 7 rolled after a point has been set and before the point is rolled again. Pass line bets lose, don't pass bets win, and a new round starts.
Is don't pass better than pass?
Marginally. Don't pass has a house edge of 1.36% against 1.41% for pass. The difference is small, so pick the one you enjoy more.
Why is 7 the most common roll in craps?
Because six combinations make it (1+6, 2+5, 3+4 and the reverse of each), more than any other total. It comes up on one roll in six on average.
Are online craps dice random?
Software craps decides each roll with a random number generator, so every roll is independent of the last. Fair Go lists Craps on its casino games page (checked 7 October 2026) and has no live dealer tables.
